As a dedicated and experienced Early Childhood Education (ECE) teacher with 15 years of service, I've had the privilege of nurturing young minds in both centre and home-based settings. Alongside my husband Dave, we've made Silverdale our home for the past three years, where we're raising our beautiful school-aged daughters, Jade and Indie. We're passionate about embracing the natural beauty of our coastal surroundings, and we love exploring the great outdoors together as a family.
With a deep commitment to fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity in children, I'm excited to connect with like-minded families and continue my journey in ECE alongside you.
I am available Tuesday-Friday, 8am-4pm.
I currently have spaces Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for under and over-2-year-old children.
I am inspired by the forest school/kindergarten movement. I am passionate about art and children learning in the outdoors. My teaching is guided by the ‘nature-based‘ and ‘play-based’ learning philosophies; taking a holistic approach to support each individual child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development, and utilising nature as our classroom.
I am enthusiastic about introducing children to new experiences and challenging them physically and creatively. I am passionate about loose parts play, and the creative learning opportunities and development this provides for little minds.
I strongly believe in the value of home based education – with the low ratios it provides a higher quality of care and creates the opportunity to be out and about exploring the world around us.
We enjoy plenty of space at home, inside and out. There is a large covered deck with lots of shade. Resources include a mud kitchen/ messy play area with paint, sand, mud/clay, water play, and rain play! I focus on natural play resources and loose parts play. We have Duplo, lego, blocks, animals, dolls, play kitchen, dress-ups, arts and crafts, Play-Doh, books and equipment for drawing.
Outdoors there is a trampoline, climbing frame, swing, spa pool, bikes, scooters and balls. Together we enjoy cooking/baking and gardening.
We go out and about in our community. We have regular weekly beach trips to Wenderholm, Long Bay, Orewa, Stanmore Bay and Shakespeare (as our fav's) . I have a focus on nature and outdoor education. We visit local playgrounds and organise regular playdates with other educators. We also utilise indoor playgroups (when the weather is not so good), and have regular excursions to the Zoo.
I have a Bachelor of Education (ECE) from The University of Auckland. I am a fully Registered Teacher. I hold a current Practicing Certificate 2 and a current first-aid certificate.
"Thrived in Her Care"
“Sophie had both my kids in her care for over 3 years and I cannot recommend her more. She is an incredible educator who focuses on your child and offers a programme that is thoughtfully tailored to their interests and abilities. She provides rich learning experiences from arts and crafts to nature play. She encourages creative thinking, problem solving and learning through ‘doing’. My kids absolutely loved their time with Sophie and thrived in her care.”
"The Perfect Educator"
“Sophie really is the perfect educator. She is kind, caring and adventurous. She can see what each child’s needs/interests are and meet them all within the group setting. She provides an environment where children can learn, explore and thrive either through outdoor adventures or at-home activities. Our son always enjoyed his time with Sophie and still has fond memories of going there.”
"So Lucky to Have Sophie"
“Sophie is a wonderful home carer, who allows self-exploration with careful guidance through different adventures. Both my kids did so many activities with her, including sewing, camping, and going to playgrounds. Every day was so exciting and the kids loved spending time with her. We were so lucky to have her be a part of our children's learning journeys”
